The Purpose of Pandemonium

The Purpose of Pandemonium

Pandemonium may be created by the Holy Spirit or by evil spirits. In either case, we need to realize God has a purpose for permitting it and we must trust Him. For instance, the biggest and most important time of pandemonium had a great purpose, our salvation.

Matt 27:22-26  “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!”  “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”  When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”  All the people answered, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!”  Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

Here we see the forces of darkness in great pandemonium in the presence of Light. They want blood. They always try to kill the Light of Jesus. We see this throughout history.

For example: (READ) Acts 19:8-41

  1. Paul saw an opportunity in Ephesus, with a population of 300,000 people.

He found a city completely in the grip of superstition, fear, demonism, and darkness. It was a city of great wickedness, and the people had morals like animals. Nevertheless, Paul saw this place of darkness as a place of opportunity, because the people needed the light of Jesus Christ.

There was much work to do there and he was having success. People were being saved and their lives were changing. As people witnessed miracles, deliverance from demons, and healing, pandemonium was building within the new church and among the unbelievers in the city. Paul stayed in Ephesus for three full years, longer than usual.

I Cor. 16:8-9 But I will stay on at Ephesus until Pentecost, because a great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me.

God opened a door of opportunity, in spite of opposition. There will always be those opposed to the truth. In their anger they, too, create pandemonium, but we are not to fear them, only God. We need to be prepared for this reaction as we go and make disciples.

The darker the room, the more our light will be seen. We can be a heavenly beam that reflects the light of Jesus Christ and creates a desire in others to step into that light themselves! We will also create fear and pandemonium among those who love the dark.

2. Paul had much opposition. In spite of its wickedness, Ephesus was a very religious city. Religion is one of the main tools the devil’s uses to blind a person to the Truth and keep them in deception. Religion wanted Jesus crucified.

Paul had to deal with at least 3 kinds of religion in that city. One was Inadequate religion. Paul always took the gospel to the Jews first. For 3 months in their synagogue he showed them that their religion was inadequate. Their OT teachings had a purpose…to point them to their coming Messiah…but he had come, Jesus Christ, and they had missed Him…they had rejected Him…they had killed Him!

Likewise, all over our city people are steeped in religion that is inadequate. On the outside, they may dress fancy and look proper, but inside they are dead men’s bones. We are not to leave them satisfied with empty ritual when they can have a vital, thriving, saving, relationship with Jesus Christ! We must not assume they are saved because they go to church. Find out if they follow Jesus and if they are intimate with Him! Just going to church is an inadequate religion.

After 3 months, some Jews believed and were saved; most did not, and they created some pandemonium and Paul left the synagogue and moved his preaching and teaching to the schoolroom.  There he dealt with imitation religion.

*Imitation religion also exists today. Just turn on today’s “Christian” television…and for a price, we can get a nice prayer cloth, or bottle of miracle spring water, prayed over by the guy on the screen. Another way we are offered imitation religion is through email. “If you forward this email to ten people you will receive a miracle or avoid a curse.”

Christians beware of imitation religion, superstitions, myths, and those who practice them! They may be popular, but they will not accomplish God’s will. We need the real thing to accomplish real things. Satan is not afraid of me or you, or anyone but God, so we must be filled with God, the Holy Spirit. Then we have God’s power over the enemy and we do not need to fear him.

James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Therefore, if you have ever been involved or experimented with occult practices, you need to get rid of those objects, as we see here in Acts 19. Some who professed to be believers continued visiting mediums, fortune tellers, psychics, the temple of Diana, and playing with horoscopes. Apparently, some still had their literature about Diana and other magic books. It is amazing how many believers today are calling psychic hotlines, playing with Ouija boards, Dungeons and Dragons, reading Harry Potter” books, or buying crystals for power, protection, and healing. No matter what we call these practices, or what excuse we use, it is still Satan’s imitation religion.

A mighty revival of God begins when believers begin to clean up their own lives, when they confess and repent of their hidden practices they do in private. Unbelievers take notice when believers repent of hypocrisy and get real, become humble, and Christlike. They are not looking for an imitation religion; they already have one.

God wants to make us like Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. He wants to get rid of all demonic influence in our lives.  There was a book burning in Acts 19, and I’ve had a few trash fires myself through the years where tapes and CD’s, books and other items of value were burned! When they added up the value in Ephesus, it was $5,000,000.

Some of us may need to go home and create a little pandemonium; throw something out, flush something down, quit doing some things, or get married. Don’t look at the cost; it’s called sacrifice; telling God He’s worthy of it, recognizing HE paid the ultimate price for you, and He is the only way to true blessings! It is time get real and get rid of all the imitation religion in our lives.

*In addition to an inadequate religion and an imitation religion, Paul had to deal with an idolatrous religion.

Ephesus had a magnificent temple to Diana. She was the goddess of fertility in the Greek culture. Her temple was called one of the 7 wonders of that world. Sex was the focus of their worship. Hundreds of “priests and priestesses” were available for an “offering”. It was prostitution in the name of worship! Sex is still a lucrative idol, and pandemonium arises today whenever we confront worshippers of this idol with the truth.

Since opportunity and opposition always co-exist, how do we overcome the pandemonium evil creates?

3. Paul shows us. After people turned to Jesus and were saved, they didn’t desire Diana anymore. Demetrius was making a fortune from selling idols of Diana, but sales were dropping fast! Therefore, he created a huge pandemonium in the city to put a stop to Paul’s ministry.

At first, it appears Demetrius was successful, forcing Paul and many disciples to leave town, but this retreat is part of God’s battle plan. Why? —To spread the Gospel. We have a tendency to camp where things are pleasant and we stop going. God’s purpose for pandemonium is to keep us moving. I had to learn that when people reject the Truth, God wants us to take it to others.

For instance, why did the minister, in my story last week, have to leave when people were being saved? Religion forced him out. I thought I would be lost without my mentor. Who would teach me?

The Holy Spirit is to be our mentor, not man. So He moves the man to minister elsewhere. However, the Holy Spirit remains in the heart of the new believer who is left behind. Consequently, the new believer learns to cling to God for comfort and direction.

Although we see pandemonium has a purpose, we tend to avoid it. For instance, when we see sin tolerated in the church, should we keep quiet to keep the peace?

We must speak truth with gentleness and kindness. The truth does not need to get loud to be heard. It is powerful enough when spoken with love for those who can hear it. Even then, a lot of pandemonium will erupt when we speak the truth. Knowing that, there is a temptation to say nothing, but that is not God’s will.

Ezek 33:7-9 "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. When I say to the wicked, 'O wicked man, you will surely die,' and you do not speak out to dissuade him from his ways, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. But if you do warn the wicked man to turn from his ways and he does not do so, he will die for his sin, but you will have saved yourself.

When the spirit of deception creates pandemonium, we can take comfort in Jesus’ words. Matt 5:10-12   Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Are you still thinking you don’t like pandemonium and are afraid of creating it? Do you prefer peace and having things stay the same? Is it your goal to just get along with everyone, so you remain silent? Who wants us to remain silent? God or satan? Who gives us a spirit of fear? Not God. He gives us a spirit of love to share the truth with others.

Jesus told us to expect the same treatment, the same pandemonium, He received. After all, Jesus did not come to earth to leave people in the same lost condition. He came against the power of darkness, the ruler of this world, to set us free. Satan causes pandemonium, but Jesus said fear not, He is with us as we follow Him and obey.

Matt 10:24-39 "A student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebub, how much more the members of his household! "So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. "Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven. "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn "'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law--a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.' "Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Therefore, it is normal for us to create a little pandemonium in people’s lives. If we aren’t, are we doing what Jesus said? If the powers of darkness were able to arrest all the Christians today, would they come after us because the Light of Christ is in us? Would they create pandemonium against us or ignore us because we pose no threat to their kingdom?

John 3:19-21  This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

1John 3:13 Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you.

The biggest day of pandemonium is yet to come. We need to be busy doing what Jesus told us to do while there is still time.

2Pet 3:10-14 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.  Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.

Are you ready for that pandemonium if it came today? Now is the time to clean up our lives, Church. Today is the day of salvation, sinner. Come to the Lord in repentance for salvation, and power to prevail over pandemonium.
