The Greatest Mother in the World

The Greatest Mother in the World

I would like to first say, "Happy Mother’s Day" to all the mothers present here this morning.  Dads, I know you are very hard workers, and faithful providers, and good fathers, but I have never seen a man that could ever labor as hard as a mother does giving birth. You mothers amaze me, how strong you are. You can carry sleepy children, groceries, purses, diaper bags, and every family member’s burden—all at the same time!

However, giving birth does not make a woman a mother. It takes a special woman to be a mother. A mother is a person (natural, step, adoptive, related, unrelated) who is willing to take the responsibility of investing her life in another human being who is totally dependent upon her.

A careful mother I ought to be,
A little one is following me
I do not dare to go astray
For fear she’ll go the selfsame way.

I cannot once escape her eyes,
Whatever she sees me do, she tries.
Like me she says she’s going to be
That little one who follows me.

She thinks that I am good and fine,
Believes in every word of mine;
The base in me she must not see
That little one who follows me.

I must remember as I go
Through times of blessing and of woe;
I am building for years yet to be
That little one who follows me.

The first mother ever mentioned in God’s Word is Eve. She was made by God, out of the side of Adam.

Gen. 2:18, 21-25 The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”… So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.  The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, ' for she was taken out of man." For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

Someone once joked, "God made woman from man’s side, and ever since, man has had a pain in his side."

Eve received her name from her husband. Gen. 3:20, Adam named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all the living. We can all trace our ancestry back to Eve.

However, Christians also have a spiritual mother from whom we all descend.

Gal. 4:26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.

This is a glorious portrayal of the Church. She is a mother. She is pure, spotless, holy, nurturing, and loving. She is the "Bride of Christ" and she gives birth to children of God. The Church is much greater than this congregation. The Church is world-wide, made up of every believer in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The Church has children of God from every tribe, nationality, language group, and culture. Not only that, the Church is also made up of every believer in Christ that has gone to Heaven before us. In the heavenly Jerusalem, they are free from the law, sin, and our earthly struggles.

Yes, the Church is huge and the gates of hell cannot prevail against it. Demon filled people may behead us, crucify us, drown us, shoot us, or burn us, but they can’t kill us, for we possess eternal life. They can only kill our body, but we live on in the heavenly Jerusalem.

Rev. 21:9-10 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.

Notice Eve was given to Adam to be his bride, as a gift from God. The Church was given to Christ as His Bride, as a gift from God the Father. The “Church” is considered the wife of the Lord Jesus Christ.

There is no closer relationship than the relationship between a husband and a wife. Notice I didn’t say, husband and husband or wife and wife. God said a man and a woman would become one flesh. God planned that marriage would produce children. Therefore, marriage is between a man and woman. Any other definition is an evil perversion.

Gen. 4:1, Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man."

The first Adam was put to sleep for God’s gift, the second Adam was put to death for God’s gift. The first Adam started the human race. The second Adam, started the spiritual race. He is the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the Lord of all the redeemed!

1 Cor. 15:21-22, For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

The first Adam brought sin into the world, and Christ, the second Adam, brought salvation to all men who would receive it. Adam brought spiritual death, Christ brought spiritual life.

Rom. 5:16-19, Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one man's sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

Eve, the mother of all living, was made from the side of her husband Adam. The Church, The Mother of all redeemed, came from the side of her husband, Jesus Christ.

John 19:34  Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.

When a person is saved, he enters into the Church through the precious blood of Jesus Christ that flowed from His side. Salvation is impossible without the saving blood of Jesus Christ.

Heb. 9:22, In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Jesus said in Matt. 26:28, This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Eve, the mother of the all living, was made by God to be a helpmate to Adam. The Church, the Mother of all the redeemed, was made to help Jesus in His mission to “seek and save that which is lost.” Eve was made one flesh with Adam. The Church is made the “body of Christ.”

1 Cor. 12:27, Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

Eph. 1:22-23, And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

A mother is physically equipped to nurture a child with milk and love. As a mother, the Church is spiritually equipped by the Holy Spirit to be nurturing. We in the church nurture young Christians as "babes in the Lord" with the milk of truth and the love of God.

A loving mother encourages her children. Because we love one another, the Church encourages one another. With the devil trying to devour the Church with his greatest weapon of discouragement, we need each other’s encouragement.

A caring mother often cries when her children are hurt, and rejoices when they succeed. The Church shed tears with the hurting members of the body. We rejoice when one of our members has a victory or an accomplishment.

Romans 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

A Christian mother will pray for her children. The Church prays for all its members, even those we’ve never met who are struggling to keep the faith.

2 Thes. 3:1-2 Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it is with you. And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men; for not everyone has faith.

A godly mother is a woman of integrity, who enjoys the presence of God. The first thing necessary to become a godly mother is a personal relationship with God, through Jesus Christ. Then your children are more likely to follow Jesus when they grow up.

2 Timothy 1:5 I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

The second thing necessary to become a godly mother is a proper relationship with her family. They are her primary mission, and she ministers to them in obedience to God. For instance, a godly mother submits to her husband’s leadership.

Ephesians 5:22-33 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church--for we are members of his body." For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."  This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

A godly mother relates properly to her children. She disciplines her children by example and corrects them in love to obey God.

Proverbs 22:6 Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.

Children learn more by what they see than what they hear. In other words, tell them what to do, but be sure to train by example.  If you love and obey God, they have an example of how to love and obey God. They don’t need an example of how to disobey God. That comes naturally with our sin nature. When they disobey, you apply discipline. Discipline and disciples come from the same root word. Your job is to make disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.

As I said, The first thing necessary to become a godly mother is a personal relationship with God. The second thing necessary is a proper relationship with your family, the third ingredient in every godly mother is a willingness to serve God.

Luke 1:38 “I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.

Today, mothers are not encouraged to be servants, neither of God nor of her family. She is encouraged to put her children in day care while she pursues a career of her choice.

Today, submission to her husband is an anathema. She is encouraged to be independent. She is told she should spend her life achieving her goals, not her husband’s. After all, she doesn’t need a man. She is woman!

Because of this attack on mothers, let us be faithful to pray for them and encourage them as they endeavor to fulfill their God ordained purpose.

Who is the greatest mother that has ever lived, and is still living today? For most, if our mother is living, we would say that we have the greatest mother in the world. We should think that, because the fifth commandment tells us to honor our mother, but I have to confess to you, that the greatest mother is not my mother or your mother, She is the Church of the Living God", “the Bride of Christ”, and "Mother of us all." Through her testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, millions are born unto eternal life.

To have an intimate relationship with your heavenly Father and Mother, you must become humble like a child and be born again of the Holy Spirit.

To experience this new birth, you must believe that Jesus is the Son of God, who atoned for your sins on the cross.

If you have faith to believe this, then repent of your sin and receive God’s forgiveness. Die to your life of sin by being buried in baptism. You will be raised to new life and filled with the Holy Spirit. You will become a child of God and The Church will become your spiritual mother, who will love you and nurture you until we all go home to our heavenly Jerusalem (place of peace).
