Say the Name

Say the Name

Jesus. It's the only name people swear by. No one says "What in Allah's name is going on?" No one texts "OMB" for "Oh My Buddha." No one ever tells an enemy to “go to purgatory”, for that place is nonexistent. They tell their enemy to “go to hell”, a place they claim doesn’t exist!

This cursing helps to prove the case that Christianity is the truth, because only Jesus' name has the power behind it to matter. Jesus is the only name which stirs up hate and venom. Why? Because it is the only name that Satan fears, and he wants to denigrate it to a curse word! Furthermore, it is the only name that can save us!

Romans 10:13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Because it is such a powerful Name, we need to know when to say it.

Exodus 20:7 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

You don't have to say God's name and then attach “damn” after it to take God's name in vain. We take it in vain anytime we speak it flippantly, when we are not talking about Him the way we are supposed to, reverently and truthfully. Have you ever heard someone exclaim the name of Jesus Christ? It is obvious they aren't honoring Him in saying it. That is taking His Name in vain. You would be offended if someone spoke your momma's name in a dishonorable way. Therefore, only say the Name of your Father in heaven or of His Son, Jesus Christ, out of love.

Jesus is the Christ, and that is the name we wear as Christians. “Christ like”, is what it means. It’s a special privilege, but an awesome responsibility to wear that Name. Don't wear the name in vain, if you aren't willing to back it up!

A story is told about Alexander the Great finding a sentry in his army asleep on guard duty—an offense punishable by death. Alexander the Great kicked the soldier and ordered him to stand up. “What is your name soldier?” Quivering, the soldier replied, “Alexander, sir.” Looking at a young man, who was about the same age as himself, Alexander the Great said, “Either change your behavior or change your name!”

Names have associations. The name Rockefeller may open doors of finance, the name Kennedy or Bush may open doors of government, Einstein may open doors of brilliance, Michelangelo may open doors of art, but the name of Jesus will open to the doors of heaven! Therefore, call on His Name!

Acts 4:12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

The name of Jesus is powerful. For 2,000 years the name of Jesus has not just reformed addicts, but transformed them. His Name has purified prostitutes, made liars tell the truth, turned haters into lovers, turned thieves into givers, made adulterers faithful, cleaned up cursing mouths, set homosexuals straight, and saved souls from hell!

Every other religion on earth has this in common today: their founder is dead. But we can say: “I serve a RISEN Savior. He is alive!" And that's why “Jesus” is a powerful name no one can escape. Ultimately, everyone will acknowledge Him as Lord.

Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The name of the Lord is sacred. It’s a holy name. When we say the name of Jesus, angels bow down, demons tremble, and Satan has to flee.

Ephesians 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

There is another dimension of living beings parallel to the physical, and there is a cosmic battle being raged around us every second of every minute of every day. Right now, there are millions of spiritual beings – both good and evil - in this world alongside human beings, and these spiritual beings influence our thoughts, our actions, and our motives. These spiritual entities can influence families, churches, cities, nations, and entire countries – both for good and for evil.

Revelation 12:7-12 Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

You may say, “I’m not interested in this spiritual dimension nor in spiritual warfare.” Well, you can’t avoid it. When we are born again into the kingdom of God, we are automatically enlisted in a spiritual battle. Before that, we were captives of the enemy, doing his will. Jesus set us free, but the enemy is now at war with us to deceive and destroy our lives. We need to recognize this and arm ourselves with the Name of Jesus! The Name of Jesus and the Word of God are the most powerful weapons available to Christians in this spiritual war.

1 John 4:1-6 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he, who is in you, is greater than he, who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

There is a concept that is probably familiar to many of us. It is the ‘Power of Attorney’, which gives you legal authority over another person’s life and their possessions. You become their representative and can literally act in their name, as if you were that person. You can access their bank accounts, write checks, and sell their possessions. You literally take on their identity and act as if you were that person!

Jesus has given all believers the right to use His Name – that’s the Power of Attorney! Power to do God’s will in the Name of Jesus—not our will, but His will.

For example, different people have different authority that is bestowed upon them and limited by a higher power. I have the authority to perform marriages, given to me by the states of Arkansas and Oklahoma. But imagine if I stood in the middle of the highway and shouted. ‘Stop! I want to perform a marriage here!’ I would be arrested, because I don’t have that authority in the middle of a highway.

But if a policeman stood up in a highway and said “Stop! In the name of the law,” you better stop! You see, the policeman has been given authority and power to act in the name of the law. The name gives him authority to do certain things.

Peter demonstrated this when he met a lame man begging at the temple. Acts 3:6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!”

The lame man was immediately healed and went walking and leaping with Peter into the temple. Later Peter was questioned about this and he testified, Acts 4:10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well.

When we say the Name of Jesus, we are calling upon all that Jesus is, all the power and redemption that is in Jesus. The Name stands for the person. And the authority to use His Name has been given to you and to me.

Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Jesus has all authority. He can change anything and anyone. He has given us authority to make disciples, baptize them, and teach them to observe His commandments. This is our commission. And if we need anything to accomplish that commission, we are to ask the Father for it in Jesus Name.

John 15:16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

1 John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.

Matthew 18:18-20 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

Jesus is present when we are gathered in His Name for prayer. His Name is not just words we use to start or end a prayer. In His Name, we are to pray for things Jesus would pray for and we are to do the things Jesus would do. In the Name of Jesus, we have the authority to break strongholds, bind demons, and loose the Holy Spirit to accomplish God’s will!

Luke 10:19-20 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

In the Name of Jesus, we don’t have to fear Satan nor his demons. In the Name of Jesus, we have authority to rebuke them and they have leave.

However, they are deceptive. So a word of caution, don’t seek the devil. He will to come to you in ways you least expect. So be alert and be ready. Seek God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Keep your eyes on Jesus and the Holy Spirit will guide you in the truth and alert you to Satan’s presence and deception.

Furthermore, don’t blame everything on the devil. We must also understand the providence of God. As believers, Satan can do nothing to us that God does not allow. Remember the story of Job. Satan had to get permission from God before he could lay a finger on Job.

There are many trials in life, some we must rebuke in the Name of Jesus, others we must flee from, and others we must simply stand strong and persevere because they are the consequences of sin—our sins or the sins of others. Don’t rebuke something that God is in fact allowing for our growth and development. But also, don’t accept something that the enemy has laid upon us to condemn and destroy us.

Therefore, it is essential to develop an intimate relationship with God through the Word and the Holy Spirit, that we may know what is an attack to rebuke, or is from the hand of God that we must receive with thanksgiving.

If you suspect that you are under an oppression of the enemy, take up your authority as a child of God. In prayer, speak in the Name of Jesus against whatever the oppression may be (fear, lust, anger, anxiety, dissention, etc.). It will leave and the peace of God will flood your soul.

You might be sitting here this morning and all this sounds a little spooky. No, this is not a Halloween sermon, although it would be appropriate and timely. Spiritual warfare is real. Satan’s biggest lie is telling us that he doesn’t exist—that demons and angels are figments of our imagination.

I have been attacked by demons of fear and lust many times and all it takes to make them leave is to say the Name of Jesus. If I don’t say the Name of Jesus, the temptation or torment continues. I found this to be true before I became a believer. There is power in His Name and that power convinced me Jesus is real and so is the devil.

You see, the Bible tells us that there are two kingdoms in this world, and only two. The kingdom of light, and the kingdom of darkness. The kingdom of God, and the kingdom of Satan. Both kingdoms have a king. We don’t see these kingdoms, but they are in the midst of us. Which kingdom are you living in at this moment?

Jesus came to deliver us from the kingdom of darkness and qualify us, by His atonement on the cross, to enter the kingdom of light through faith in Him.

Colossians 1:13-14 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

It is important that we understand that the Name of Jesus is not a curse word, a word of exclamation, or an incantation that works like a magic formula. It is a holy name, so powerful that it is the only word a person needs to know to be saved.

A person doesn’t have to know any of the Bible. He doesn’t even need to know how to read. All he has to know is Jesus. He can call on the Name of Jesus, and all the power associated with that Name will come to his aid to give him grace to believe and faith in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sin and the salvation of his soul.

Do you need to be rescued from the kingdom of darkness and demonic oppression? Do you want to live in the kingdom of God and enjoy His peace? Then believe and call on the Name of Jesus to save you. Repent of the sin of being your own lord and doing what you want to do. Give your life to Jesus by following Him in baptism. Then you will be born again of the Holy Spirit, who will lead you to walk in the light of Jesus Christ. Then you will have authority to use the Name of Jesus to accomplish His will in your life.
