Independence Is America's Problem

Independence is America’s Problem

I’m glad for freedom and thankful for those who struggled and gave their lives so that we can be free. It was Christians, the Pilgrims, who first started colonies in this country seeking religious freedom. Our founding fathers declared freedom from the tyranny of England and risked their lives and fortunes in a war to secure it. Later, a civil war was fought that brought freedom from slavery. America has fought several wars so others could be free. Today, freedom continues to be something we must fight for.

But what have we done with our freedom?  In the past 50 years, we have used it to do whatever we want independent of God. In doing this, America has rejected the Truth.

John 8:31-32 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

By forming a nation established on Christ’s teaching, America became known as a nation of freedom in the days when kings ruled nations by decree. Now, instead of following the Truth, many Americans have declared independence from God.  Thinking this will give them more freedom, they have become enslaved to the tyranny of sin.

1 Pet 2:16 “Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.”

Freedom is found in serving Jesus Christ. Therefore, independence from God has become America’s problem. As a result, America is now facing many crises. The biggest threat we face today is not the hoax of man-made climate change, it is something called, ‘Political Correctness.’ Anyone who speaks the truth, that is contrary to a political persuasion, is branded a “hater”. And when we don’t tell the truth, all we are left with is lies. As a result, America is being led by dishonesty, distortion, misinformation, deception, fabrications, and propaganda.

A nation’s greatness is not based on its population, military, or politics. It is not measured on its technological progress or wealth. A nation’s greatness is only determined by how much that nation depends on God to be their leader. Our nation has been great because most of its people were following God and were good. It is ceasing to be great because most of its people are no longer following God and are calling good evil and evil good.

Psalm 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance.

America has lost her guiding light, God Almighty. We think we are self-sufficient. We have decided we do not need God any more. We have taken God out of our lives and we are plunging headlong into a dark and painful misery that is just beginning. And misery doesn’t just apply to nations—it applies to every individual who puts their selfish desires above God’s.

Psalm 33:10 The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.

It is no coincidence that we have been abundantly blessed, all because our forefathers put God over this nation. Most of our original legal documents referenced their belief in Jesus as Savior and God as head of this nation. As we become less dependent on God, our blessings and freedoms fade away.

Here are a few examples of what our founding fathers said concerning this nation and God.

PATRICK HENRY - A Founding Father
‘It cannot be emphasized too strongly that this great nation was founded – not by religionists, but by Christians, on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.’

JAMES MADISON, our 4th President
‘We have staked the future of American civilization on our capacity to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.’

DANIEL WEBSTER, a prominent senator prior to the Civil War
If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will prosper, but if we neglect its authority, a catastrophe will someday overcome us.’

More recently, RONALD REAGAN said,
‘Without God, democracy will not and cannot endure. If we ever forget that we’re one nation under God, we will soon be a nation gone under.’

There are warnings in the Bible for nations and individuals. Throughout history, leaders of our country have emphasized these warnings. However, the Supreme Court, who has Moses and the Ten Commandments engraved in their courtroom, has decided to ignore the Bible and the Constitution of the United States to make decisions our forefathers never intended for America. Here are a few decisions that should give us great concern for our future.

In 1962, the Supreme Court made prayer in the classroom illegal. Since then, our schools have become dangerous and non-productive.

In 1963, reading the Bible in public schools was made illegal. Since then, students have been expelled for just carrying a Bible.

In 1973, the Supreme Court legalized the abortion of unborn babies. Since then, tens of millions of babies have been murdered. God sees each death. He has decreed that punishment will come upon individuals and nations for sacrificing their children (Lev. 20:1-5).

In 2003, the Supreme Court struck down a Texas law banning the public practice of homosexuality. Since then, if you even say anything negative about homosexuality, you can be prosecuted for violating the Federal hate crimes law.

And just last week, the Supreme Court legalized homosexual marriage in all 50 states. We haven’t begun to see the consequences of that decision, but they will be drastic. However, we can know why this happened and what to anticipate.

Romans 1:18-32 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

This week, the 10 Commandments were outlawed on government property. America has purposely declared independence from God. Therefore, the plunge into depravity continues.
We are witnessing the fall of America. When God is removed, evil prevails. Everywhere we turn, we see hatred and belligerence. We see God and Christians being attacked, and our society is unravelling before our eyes. There is no respect for the law. Prison time has become a badge of honor, like military time used to be. Many Americans are no longer industrious by seeking an education or a job. They are seeking their next high from drugs.

America is on the path of receiving God’s punishment just like the ancient Israelites received when they ignored God and His Word. The prophets who witnessed Israel’s destruction described a horrible sight, culminating in suffering, slavery, and death.

What can we do? We are not responsible for what others have done in the past, nor are we responsible for others may do in the future, but we are responsible for what we do today. We must exercise our political freedom while we have it, but more importantly, we must pray for revival. God has brought revival before and He can do it again; however, we have to pray. This is not a war against flesh and blood, but against demonic powers causing this evil and tyranny.

It will not be a quick fix. We did not get this way overnight, nor will revival happen quickly. This is a call to persistent and persevering prayer and repentance. Dan Puckett in The Blessing of Freedom wrote: “The key to continued freedom, as a nation, lies directly with the individual. It is not too late. God was instrumental in the formation of this nation, and continues to stand ready to respond to the cries of His people, as they humble themselves to Him. And He is only waiting for His people, the Christians, to rise up and commit themselves to His standard of conduct in the way they live their lives.”

2 Chron. 7:14  if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Notice, God will forgive our sin and heal our land if (these are big ifs):

1. if we humble ourselves (put Him above ourselves and give up our pride and independence). We can be healed, but the first thing we need to do is the hardest thing—humble our hearts to the Lord.
2. if we pray (go to Him for forgiveness). Prayer is how our national problems will be solved. We can regain our freedom by returning to dependence upon God. Healing this nation, will require the salvation and rebirth of one person at a time.  For each individual, we must pray.

3. if we will seek after God (pursue Him instead of worldly pleasures).
4. and if we will repent (stop participating in the sin of this world and start living for Him).

1Tim 2:4 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

On the other hand, revival may not be God’s plan. There is another possible outcome. We could be living in the last days before Jesus returns. In such a case, people will not repent and things will only get worse. This, too, calls for humility, prayer, repentance, and perseverance.

Matthew 24:3-14 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ, ' and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. "Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”

If these are the days Jesus is speaking about, Christians should not fear the coming persecution, but they should get prepared for it, repent of all sin, be willing to suffer and die. Meanwhile, we should be spreading the Gospel and focusing on Jesus, for our redemption draws close.

Luke 21:25-28 "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

A light shines brightest in the darkness. Like the early days of Christianity, this could be our brightest hour. Many of our brothers and sisters in Islamic countries are already experiencing the ultimate persecution. Don’t be afraid. Don’t take your eyes off of Jesus and His Word.

Matthew 24:44-51 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. "Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, 'My master is staying away a long time,' and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Since we don’t know when Jesus is coming, the Church has always believed that we need to be in a state of readiness for His return. While we wait, we must do God’s will. Here are some instructions (they are not suggestions; they are commandments):

1 Peter 4:7-11 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

While the world kills and destroys one another, Christians must be filled with the Holy Spirit so they have grace to love one another deeply, bind together, encourage, serve, and glorify God through Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 3 Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles. First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, "Where is this 'coming' he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation." But they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

Are you ready for the day when Jesus returns? If not, you can get ready by believing Jesus Christ is Lord, the Son of God, and the Savior of your life. If you believe that, then confess your sin to Him and ask Him to forgive you. Repent of all independence from God and become dependent upon Him and His Word. Obey His Word by submitting to baptism and He will give you eternal life born of the Holy Spirit.

If you are a believer, but you have been acting like Jesus isn’t coming soon, we encourage you to repent and get ready. We have wasted enough time seeking the things of this world and the easy life.

Our freedom is disappearing while people declare their independence from God. Persecution will increase rapidly to make the Church irrelevant, powerless, and archaic. Already there are threats of repealing the Church’s tax exempt statist if it doesn’t become politically correct.

Pray—pray continually—for yourself, your brethren in Christ, and for God the Holy Spirit to bring conviction of sin upon people so they have grace to repent and ask for God’s forgiveness through Jesus Christ. For them to know this hope, we must share the Gospel, for faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Furthermore, they need to see this faith lived out through our lives. Ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit so you have power to be a witness of Jesus Christ through everything you do and say. Our country is self-destructing and people are going to hell. And as Jesus implied, we may go with them if we don’t repent of our hypocrisy and apathy.
