Faith of Our Fathers

Faith of Our Fathers

An Arkansas farmer took his family to the nation’s capital for vacation. They went to the Senate gallery, where the chaplain of the Senate was speaking.

"Daddy," asked the farmer’s ten-year-old daughter, "does the chaplain pray for the Senate?" "No," said the farmer. "He comes in, looks at the Senators, and then prays for the country."

This nation is nearly 244 years old. Of the founding fathers, 52 of the 55 men who formed the constitution were active members of their churches.

Founding father Patrick Henry said, “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians, not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ!”

As a result of their faith in God and their vision of a society where each person is free to make choices and is personally responsible for their choice, we have many freedoms and opportunities. However, many folks who live here do not seem to appreciate what we have. They want to take away the God ordained freedom that every person on this planet should be able to enjoy. They seek a godless socialist society where each person is responsible to government and dependent upon it for everything. Everywhere this has been attempted, it has failed and resulted in poverty and loss of freedom.

Nevertheless, these godless socialists have taken over much of our educational system, media, and government. Do not be deceived. The protests and riots are no longer about George Floyd. They are now about tearing down this country and making a new one. To accomplish that, they must take down President Trump’s approval, the economy, create chaos, and make you wish for better news. The protests will continue until they are no longer achieving their intent. The news media is their accomplice and will only report good news when their socialist candidates are in office. So, if you want peace, if you want the truth, turn off the media and turn to God’s Word.

As our nation continues to turn away from God, we see mounting debts, lower moral standards, more crime, the destruction of the family, and other evils. But now, these evils are called good and good is called evil. This social and political revolution is turning our nation upside down and causing self-destruction.

Isaiah 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

National self-destruction is what a large percentage of socialists seek. They want to fundamentally reshape this country from its Christian heritage. To do that, these opponents of religious freedom must marginalize people of faith by shutting them out of any societal influence.

For example, Samaritan’s Purse serves all people, no questions asked, and at no charge. When New York City’s Mount Sinai Hospital recently asked Samaritan’s Purse to open a field hospital in Central Park to care for those in need, the ministry eagerly did so. But the Southern Poverty Law Center called for the field hospital to be expelled. Why? Because Samaritan’s Purse hires people who share its faith, which includes the belief that marriage is the union of one man and one woman.

Leftist groups like the ACLU and Southern Poverty Law Center think that what you and I believe is wrong. We are in the way of what they want to accomplish. They seek to marginalize us because we dare to believe what the Bible says about marriage and sexuality. They will not let us participate in society until we quit obeying God and start obeying them. To them, we are despicable, bitter clingers to our Bibles and guns.

If we comply and remain silent, we will hasten the loss of what God has blessed us with and what people have fought and died for. Without God, this nation will not achieve the greatness that our founders wanted.

There are three pillars that make our nation strong, the civil government, the family, and the Church. Each of these pillars needs to be built on the foundation of Jesus. If we build these pillars on any other foundation, our nation will crumble.

The socialists are steadily chipping away at each of these pillars. We see their activity in government. They are open and vocal about their intent now. We see their destruction of the family all around us. They have even influenced the Church to ignore the Bible and adopt their evil philosophy under the guise of tolerance and inclusiveness.

Therefore, we need to remind ourselves of the faith and intent of this nation’s founding fathers before our history is totally rewritten and all the statues and memorials are removed.

Let’s begin this morning with the government. What does God say?

Romans 13:1-7 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

We need to remember that when Romans 13 was written, the government was persecuting Christians. Nevertheless, civil government is ordained by God! We are to be in subjection to the ruling authorities as long as they are not requiring us to disobey God.

Our nation’s founding fathers had a good understanding of what government’s role was to be. They believed government is not to be the giver of liberty, but the protector of liberty. Since government receives its authority from God, it should govern within the framework God establishes.

Therefore, our system of laws and the constitution are built on the Bible. For instance, the three branches of government are based on Isaiah 33:22 For the LORD is our judge [judicial]; the LORD is our lawgiver [legislative]; the LORD is our king [executive]; he will save us.

The Supreme Court declared in 1892, "Our laws and our institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of the Redeemer of mankind. It is impossible that it should be otherwise. In this sense and to this extent, our civilizations and our institutions are emphatically Christian."

Some curious Political Science professors at the University of Houston gathered 15,000 quotes from the Founders and located where all of them came from. They discovered 34% of all quotes were from the Bible, and another 60% of the quotes were from men who were using the Bible to arrive at their conclusions.

This is no longer widely known. Our Christian heritage has been purged from the public school system. The younger generations are taught that the United States was founded on evil principals and therefore it must be radically changed.

Abraham Lincoln said, “The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next."

If are going to survive as a nation, we need to teach our children the Truth. Until that reoccurs in the public school system, we must educate our children at home or in a private institution where Jesus is Lord.

Noah Webster said in 1828, “The Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children, under a free government, ought to be instructed....No truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government intended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people."

George Washington said, “Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”

In addition to the government, the family is one of the pillars of our nation. It is easy to pick on the government schools for the social and educational problems of our country. However, the problem begins at home.

Jesus must be the Lord of our homes. Dads, that is your responsibility! Fatherless homes and those with absentee fathers or dysfunctional fathers statistically produce the most delinquent children. They now rioting in our streets, looting, and rebelling against all authority. They want to defund the police and are attempting to become like the “brown shirts” of socialist Nazi Germany, who terrorized their communities into submission.

Deuteronomy 11:18-21 You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth. to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens remain above the earth.

Parents are the first teachers of our youth. What are we teaching them? Are we helping them get a good education? Are we having family devotions where we pray and study the Bible together? Are we teaching our children about Jesus with our actions and words? There are too many children who are receiving nothing at home concerning their training in righteousness. You see the results on TV.

Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children, instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

The family needs to be under the lordship of Jesus. Again, fathers that is your responsibility. The Church is here to support the teaching you are giving at home.

James Madison, the chief architect of the Constitution said, "We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We have staked the future of all of our political institutions upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves...according to the Ten Commandments of God."

The family, followed by the nation, will crumble when they are not built on the foundation of Jesus. This is also true for the Church.

Colossians 1:15-18 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

We need to remember that First Christian Church is not my church or your church. This church and all Christian churches belong to Jesus. Jesus is the head of The Church worldwide. The Church is each person who is a part of it, so we all need to allow Jesus to be the lord of our lives. We are subject to Him.

We have been sucked into the lie of the separation of Church and state. The only wall of separation there is constitutionally concerning the Church and the state is the one-way wall that keeps the state out of the Church.

In the 1958 Supreme Court case Bear vs. Colmorgan, one of the Justices said in a stinging dissent, “If this court doesn’t stop talking about separation of church and state, someone will think it is part of the Constitution.”

Dr. William James, the father of modern Psychology said,” There is nothing so absurd but if you repeat it often enough people will believe it.”

The media loves to repeat lies to influence our thinking. One of the ways they do this is to report the findings of a poll. (At least they say they took a poll. Have they ever asked you what you think? Who are these 1000 people they asked.) The media knows nobody likes to be in the minority. Being in the minority makes you think you must be wrong. So the media asks questions in a manner to get the answers they want and then reports the poll to influence public opinion.

Don’t let them influence you! Regardless of the legitimacy or accuracy of these polls, if 100% of the country thinks something is right and God said it is wrong, then it is wrong! His opinion is the only one that matters!

The Church has allowed public opinion to influence it so that it will be attractive to unbelievers. As a result, the Church has lost its ability to influence society. It will not regain respect until we quit compromising with worldly opinions, trying to be popular, and we submit to God’s lordship in our lives. That will make us different from the world, which is what we are supposed to be. That will make us targets of persecution. Jesus said persecution would happen and when it does to consider yourself blessed by God. After all, Jesus was persecuted. We are to be like Jesus so the world will have an example of who He is and what He is like.

For America to be great again, Jesus must be the God of our government. Jesus must be the God of our homes. Jesus must be the God of our churches. But for this to happen we must first allow Him to be the Lord of our lives!

Is Jesus Lord of your life?

Fathers, you are the key to a revival that would make this country great again. Become the man of God He intends for you to be by making Jesus your Lord. Then you can lead your family, the Church, and this country back to greatness.

To begin making Jesus your Lord, you must believe He is the Son of God who atoned for our sin on the cross. Repent of being your own lord and follow Jesus in baptism, ending your old life of sin. Then you will be raised to a new life born of the Holy Spirit, who will conform your thinking and life to Jesus Christ.
