Evidences of Being Filled with the Holy Spirit

Evidences of Being Filled with the Holy Spirit

Last week we acknowledged the command in Ephesians 5:18 “to be filled with the Holy Spirit”. What does that look like? What evidence indicates one is filled with the Spirit?

First of all, a person who is filled with the Spirit does not have to advertise his filling of the Spirit to his fellowman. He does not go to church and boast about his holiness, his purity, his godliness, his gifts, and his spirituality.

The Holy Spirit is God in the world and God in believers to glorify Jesus. He is not in the world to glorify us, nor to glorify us before men.

The person who is possessed by and filled entirely with the Holy Spirit will follow the Lord—not man! His daily living and conversation advertises his faith. People know his faith by his love for God and for others. He exhibits the fruit of the Spirit, which is evidence that he is filled with the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

In addition, a Spirit-filled person is a thankful person—always, and for all things. He is thankful to God the Father, because He sent God the Son, Jesus, to atone for his sin, making the filling of God, the Spirit, possible. If Jesus had not left Heaven and surrendered Himself into the hands of wicked men who nailed Him to the cross, if He had not died and rose again, we could not enjoy this precious salvation and the glorious filling of the Holy Spirit. A Spirit-filled person will be always be thankful for the Lord Jesus, and for the joy, peace, blessings, assurance, and security that we have through the grace of God and shed blood of Christ.

A Spirit-filled person praises the Lord, and rejoices always, for he trusts God completely. His thankfulness is not be confined to Sunday worship; it is evoked every day by everything—blessings as well as trials, for he believes God works all things for good (Romans 8:28).

1 Thessalonians 5:18 Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

A Spirit filled person is not distracted by the worries, riches, or pleasures of this life. He concentrates all his resources on loving Jesus Christ and obeying Him. He highly values an intimate relationship with God.

  1. 42:1-2 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

This thirst or love for God inspires a believer to get alone with the Lord every morning to hear Him speak through His Word, and to allow the Holy Spirit to fill him with His power to be like Jesus during the day that lies before him. As a result, when he is out in the world, the Holy Spirit gives him power to resist temptation and be Christ’s ambassador.

When people attack his faith, The Spirit of God reminds him they are rejecting Jesus, not him. He does not retaliate and he does not retreat. He acts like Jesus.

Jesus said, Luke 10:16 "He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me."

If the Spirit filled person begins to waver and get distracted from following Jesus or is tempted to indulge his flesh, the Holy Spirit brings correction and discipline. The Word judges his thoughts and the attitudes of his heart and he repents. He allows the Spirit to expose his sin and to renew his mind, change his will, and alter his emotions. He is quick to repent and go to the throne of God for mercy and for grace to say “No” to his flesh and to follow Jesus more closely.

The Spirit filled believer has grace to forgive. Because he has been shown mercy and has been forgiven of much sin by the Father, he is willing to show mercy and forgive others. He does not hold grudges. Instead, the Spirit gives him grace to love those who hurt him—even his enemies.

The Spirit filled believer concentrates his efforts on pleasing the Lord rather than trying to please people or his own selfish desires. He lives, moves, and has his being in Christ. He listens to the Spirit and walks accordingly, denying his flesh.

Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

The Spirit filled believer loves the Church of Jesus Christ. He loves the fellowship of God’s children. Even though he reaches out to the unsaved and is friendly to them, he does not desire to be constantly with people who are ungodly, undisciplined, and prone to anger, lust, or fearful reactions.

Proverbs 13:20 He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

The Spirit filled believer has a sense of peace, even though others around him lose their composure. When he is tempted to be fearful or angry, he prays for God’s grace to be a witness of Jesus Christ instead of reacting according to his flesh.

Hebrews 12:14-15 Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.

The Spirit filled believer manifests self-control, one of the characteristics of the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Self-control is that great quality which makes him able to live and to walk in the world, and yet remain holy and obedient to God. He practices self-control in his speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity of life. He says “No” to fleshly desires and “Yes” to God’s desires in spite of the difficulty and the difference from the rest of the culture.

1 Thessalonians 5:6-8 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.

The Spirit filled believer prays unceasingly. He constantly communicates with the Father by listening to the Spirit and expressing his love and concerns to the Father. He acknowledges that by himself, he can do nothing. So he prays that God will prepare his body, soul, and spirit for all that God wants him to do. He prays for the needs of others. When he doesn’t know how to pray, the Holy Spirit enables him to pray according to God’s will, even if only with groans.

Romans 8:26-27 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

The Spirit filled believer is blessed with knowledge, wisdom, discernment, and insights that an unbeliever cannot understand. He allows the Holy Spirit to renew and transform his mind. Therefore, he does not conform to the world and relates everything to the Word of God.

The Holy Spirit gives him power to become increasingly like Jesus Christ and to be His witness on earth. He lifts Jesus up in his personal life, his relationships, his ministries, and everywhere he goes. Living by the Spirit, saying and doing what He commands, is how he preaches the Gospel and makes disciples.

2 Peter 1:3-11 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

In summary, these are some of the evidences of being filled with the Spirit. Do they describe you? Are you in the process of being changed by the Spirit from one degree of glory to another into the image of Jesus? If not, you need to repent of being in control and ask your Father in Heaven for the Holy Spirit. Then yield to the Spirit every moment of the day the rest of your life.

We have a command to “be filled with the Spirit”. God doesn’t give us a command without giving us the grace needed to obey that command. Therefore, ask for the Spirit.

Luke 11:13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"

If you don’t have a relationship with your Father in Heaven, you have no access to the power of the Holy Spirit. The Way to God the Father is through God the Son, Jesus Christ. The whole reason Jesus came to this earth is to die on a cross so you can be reconciled with your Father in Heaven. Sin has separated you from Him, but Jesus’ atonement on the Cross has provided you with forgiveness of sin and made the way for you to have an intimate relationship with God.

It begins with believing in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and His atonement on the Cross for your sin. Make Jesus your Lord and Savior by repenting of your sin—of being your own god. Confess Jesus as Lord, and follow Him in baptism, which is the death to your old life and the birth of a new life by the Holy Spirit, who will continue to renew your mind and conform your life to be like Jesus.
