Big Numbers, Little Ones

Big Numbers - Little Ones

We hear big numbers of dead from the tsunami in the Philippines, or the earthquake in Haiti a few years ago. 200,000 dead sounds like a lot and it is a lot. It is a big number, and many of them are little ones--children.

But here's another number: 55 million. That's approximately how many have died in America in the holocaust of abortion since January 22, 1973 when the Supreme Court decided to make abortion legal, placing our official stamp of approval as a nation upon the death of the innocent. 55 million--that's a really big number, and they are ALL little ones! God had a plan for each one of them.

Jer 1:4-5 The word of the LORD came to me, saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

Last week, we took a glimpse at persistent prayer. The 41-year battle against abortion is one of those satanic strongholds that we are to persistently war against with our prayers, but persistent prayer requires a passion for the object of prayer. Do you have a passion from God about abortion?

Abortion terminates the lives of human babies with souls from the moment of conception--babies who have developed physically, with beating hearts, digesting stomachs--babies recoiling in pain, desperately trying to escape their killers! Nevertheless, proponents of abortion claim that they are not taking a life. How can they honestly say that? If the coroner determines a person is dead is by the absence of a heartbeat, shouldn’t the presence of a heartbeat prove there is life!?

Christians, we must continue to pray and to repent. We must not become weary in this battle for life. We must continue to speak out, raise our voices, and vote to protect the innocent; but above all, to pray, for this is a spiritual battle and our prayers are more powerful than politicians and judges.

Prov 31:8-9 "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."

The pro-abortion crowd yells and screams about freedom of choice. “It’s my body,” they cry.

WHAT ABOUT THE BABY’S BODY? Who will cry out for them?

While we go about our business tomorrow, 4,400 more innocent people will be submitted to capital punishment. Although they committed no crime, they will have no trial before they are executed. They have no attorney, and will not be granted the basic rights of even a prisoner of war.

Not only will they not be treated humanely, not only will they not be afforded the basic anesthetics used by every veterinarian in the world, but they will die a torturous death, ripped apart by forceps and injected with toxins. 4,400 per day...that's a big number, and they are all little ones!

Violence is not the way to stop abortion. It’s never right to do wrong. But we have the opposite problem, which is apathy and forgetfulness. However, God hasn't forgotten, and He will judge us according to what we have done concerning this issue! We need passionate, persistent, prayer, followed by Holy Spirit led action!

In this country, we have laws prohibiting discrimination against the handicapped. We even provide special access to the handicapped so they can enjoy the same privileges as everyone else. Yet, when someone is pregnant with a child that may be less than “perfect,” they are encouraged to abort it. Why is it that at the grocery store, we protect, defend, and stand up for the handicapped; and in the womb if there is a chance of the child having a handicap, there's only a desire to get rid of "the problem"?

Many, who were once fervent about this issue, have grown weary in the fight. It doesn’t seem to win elections anymore. They are ready to move on to pursue happiness and other rights. But they have forgotten, there is no pursuit of happiness if there is no right-to-life!

On the other hand, the abortion crowd has not grown weary in the fight. Thankfully, neither has God. Every life is sacred to God. He created it.

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Col. 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him.

Abortion is destroying God’s creation. It grieves Him. It angers Him. Life is valued by God.

Isa 49:16 See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.

John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

At best, life is a challenge in this sin-tainted world. It would be wonderful if God's original plan had continued, but unfortunately sin came into our world through man’s choice and with it came pain, imperfection, injustice, and death. God warned man of the consequences of choosing sin; nevertheless, in His mercy, He still loves us and enables those who believe to be victorious over sin through His Son, Jesus Christ.

1 Pet 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

John 16:33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Jesus showed special concern for the lame, the blind, the woman with the issue of blood, the lepers. We must have the same concern for those who have handicaps in this life.

Max Lucado tells about a sweater that hangs in his closet. He says he never wears it -- it's too small, the sleeves are too short, the shoulders too tight, some of the buttons are missing, and the thread is frazzled. Logically, he says, he should throw out that sweater since he has no use for it. It simply takes up space in his closet. That's what logic says. But love, he reports, won't let him.

Why not? What's unusual about that sweater? To start with, it has no label, no tag telling you "Wash in cold water." That's because it wasn't made in a factory, produced on an assembly line by a nameless employee earning a living. Rather, it was the creation of a devoted mother expressing her love -- his mother. That sweater is unique, one of a kind, irreplaceable. Each strand was chosen with care, each thread selected with affection for him. And so, even though that sweater has lost all of its use, it has lost none of its value. It is valuable not because of its function, but because of its MAKER. So is each life like that sweater.

Our Lord places great value on those whom society has deemed worthless. While on his knees, an outcast leper begged Jesus to make him clean. Mark 1:41 Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!"

Life not only has value because God created it; life exists before we are born.

Ps 139:13-16 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Furthermore, regardless of the condition of our earthly life, it is a prelude to eternity in either Heaven or Hell. Therefore, every life is important.

Heb 9:27-28 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

1 John 5:11-13 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Now what should we do about putting an end to abortion and the big number of little ones who are dying? There are at least 8 things.

1. Pray. This battle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual powers of the satanic realm. Prayer is how we war against these powers.

2. Be informed. We can’t bury our heads in the sand. Ignoring the issue doesn’t make it go away.

3. Work and pray some more. It is possible to overturn Roe v. Wade if we will pray, speak up, vote, and are willing to suffer for doing right! Martin Luther King Jr. is an excellent example of a Christian Brother, who prayed, preached, worked, and suffered to defeat an evil stronghold, while at the same time, promoting non-violence and love among all people. For this reason alone, everyone can celebrate his birthday tomorrow.

4. Teach sexual morality in the home. We need to teach our kids a higher standard than “being safe.” If you didn’t always hold to that standard in your lives, repent, acknowledge your sin and ask your children to forgive you. Teach them and help them to do better.

5. Speak out clearly without apology. Isa 58:1 "Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet. Declare to my people their rebellion and to the house of Jacob their sins.

6. Stand on the truth of God’s Word. Refuse to be swayed by the high sounding arguments of politicians, liberal theologians, and so-called “experts” in the scientific field who have no moral base to speak from.

7. Pray unto God to have mercy on America, to give us more time to repent, and to bring a national revival.

Remember slavery? At one time in this country, the Supreme Court said it was legal for one person to own another person. Slaves were property. Black people were not fully human, they said. You could beat them, sell them, trade them, or kill them. In those days, it was probably difficult to imagine life without slavery. However, today slavery is not only illegal, but even the thought of it is repulsive. Slavery was never right even though it was legal for a time. Just as slavery was overturned, let's have faith that God will bring about a defeat of abortion as well.

Also, pray for mercy, for there are consequences for killing 55 million babies. Ending slavery cost the lives of 650,000 people in the Civil War, put half of the country in poverty, and created a huge amount of hurt and bitterness in the nation. As the Civil War shows, violence is not the answer. Only God can bring a revival to this nation and a peaceful end to this holocaust.

8. Love. This is most important. We need to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength; and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Luke 10:27). Only when we love God as we should, can we truly love others. It's easy to love the innocent little babies who are the victims of abortion. God made them lovable.

However, we must also love the women who are getting the abortions. They too are victims. Not wholly innocent victims, but victims of their own sin and their lack of a relationship with Jesus. Some seeking abortion are in very desperate situations, others are more casual about it.

Premarital sex is a sin; rape is a sin; incest is a sin. Whether she sinned or someone sinned against her, a woman does not need the additional burden of sin, added to her conscious, that comes from murdering her child. Whatever the reason for the pregnancy, we need to love these women as much as we love the babies they are carrying. Their souls are equally precious to God. We need to make sure they are welcome in our midst and show them that we love them, too. We need to encourage them to give life to the child, and if they are unable to care for it, to allow the child to be adopted by another family.

Perhaps the hardest people to love are those who are in some way promoting abortion. But Jesus said, Matt 5:44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

Does that mean we are to pray for and love the abortion doctors, nurses, clinic workers, pro-abortionists, and liberal lawmakers? That's exactly what it means. These people are also victims of sin, used as pawns of Satan. Willing pawns, yes, but God wants to reach them anyway, possibly through us.

We should hate the things these people do, and we must oppose them at every turn. But we cannot hate them. We need to be channels for God's love. It's true that pro-abortionists are taking a segment of society, the unborn, and declaring them to have no value. But if we aren't willing to love the pro-abortionists, then we are saying that they as a “people group” have no value.

We must find creative ways to share the love of Jesus with them. Obviously, unless they turn to Jesus in humility and repentance, they will have to account for their acts before the throne of God. It will be an awesome and terrible day when all they can receive from God is justice.

One word of caution, Christians who are pro-life must be pro-Jesus first. Jesus must always be our focus. We must be careful not to allow ourselves to be consumed by a cause, rather than be consumed by Jesus. Giving even a godly cause priority above our personal relationship with God will grieve Him. Jesus must be our foundation – Jesus must be the source of our passion – Jesus must be the master of our prayers and actions.

Getting the abortion laws changed is an excellent short-term goal. The sooner abortion is outlawed the better. However, if getting the laws changed is our ultimate goal, we are stopping short of the mark. After the laws are changed, then what? A self-centered, godless mentality is why abortion is flourishing. Roe v. Wade is only a reflection of our nation’s rebellion against God. We cannot legislate morality or spirituality into people's hearts.

Therefore, we must also pray for an even higher goal: that the Holy Spirit will bring a revival and change people's hearts by bringing the reality of Jesus to everyone we encounter. Only a relationship with God can change people's hearts. When hearts are changed, right choices are made.

Are you in this battle for the Lord? If not, the way to enlist is to confess that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior, repent of your sin, and die to yourself in baptism. Then Jesus will give you a new life and power from the Holy Spirit. You will become a new creation, born again to be a child of God and live forever in His Kingdom. Jesus wants you! Come to Him, just as you are, today.

Maybe you have been affected by abortion in some way. Maybe you need to repent of your apathy or your wrong ideas about abortion. Whatever your need, come to Jesus and receive from the Lord.
