Mush God or Mighty God

Mush God or Mighty God

Years ago, Leonard Ravenhill quoted a piece by columnist Nicholas Van Hoffman about what he calls "The Mush God."  Hoffman wrote: “The Mush God has been known to appear all over the world on Sunday mornings to a great many people wanting to relax, read the Sunday paper, and have a nice hot cup of coffee. He is always there to soothe you and put your mind at rest. Always ready to tell you that you deserve a rest today, because you have worked so hard during the week. He is also eager to tell you about that really important game on TV, or to remind you about all the things that you need to do around the house on Sunday morning.

“During the week, the Mush God appears all over the place. He appears with politicians at ribbon-cutting ceremonies, and to clergymen speaking at the start of all the various government legislative proceedings. In fact, the Mush God is the god that politicians always seem to turn to. The Mush God just adores politicians.

“The Mush God is also the father of the innocuous and harmless prayer. Most people just love to hear the Mush God speak. You could easily get him to give an opening prayer at the start of a hooker's convention, and he would gladly promise that no one at all would be offended. The Mush God is very proud that his beliefs and doctrines are completely non-irritating and non-offensive. This Mush God loves to interact with other people, and he especially loves to show up whenever spiritual questions are being debated. He just loves to talk about his views on tolerance.

“The Mush God has no theology to speak of. His is a pure Cream of Wheat type of divinity. Here is finally a God that doesn't believe in strictness and rigidity. His laws seem to be made out of rubber, because they bend so much. You can take any of his laws and mold them in a much more, "useful" manner. People just love this Mush God, because he is so very easy to get along with.

“The Mush God has no particular credo, no tenets of faith, nothing that would make it difficult for either the believer or the nonbeliever alike to lower their heads when he speaks. In fact, the Mush God is not a jealous god at all, and will gladly share the platform with any other gods that anyone might have.

“Call him the god of the Rotary, or the god of the optimists. This god is the protector of the Buddy System. The Mush God is the Lord of secular ritual.

“The Mush God is a serviceable god, who will fit in anywhere. His laws are chiseled not on tablets of stone, but they are written on sand, which allows his laws to be open to amendment, qualification, change, and erasure. His laws can easily blend in with the beliefs of anyone.

“Here is a god that will compromise with you. He will gladly relax the rules. Here is a god that is all too happy to look the other way. Here is a god who is a good friend to everyone. In fact, the Mush God tells all his friends that they can do no wrong, that all activities are fine with him. And most people just love him for that, and are all too happy to follow him, where ever he might lead them.”

Does this describe your god? Preachers of the Mush God emphasize love and sweep sin under the rug.  I’ve seen the Mush God offered in churches where no repentance is required, no need to be sorry for your sin, and no need to die to yourself and live for a holy God. Just believe and repeat this prayer to yourself. Presto, you are saved and you can live your life as you please with no worry about hell and damnation. What a deal! Who doesn’t desire a mush god?

Well I don’t, because he is a false god. Yes, God loves us. Yes, God saves us just as we are.  Yes, it’s true we don’t have to “clean ourselves up” before we come to Christ. The Holy Spirit does that after baptism. But to imply that God loves even our sin is a horrible perversion of the Holy God of Scripture and an insult to Jesus who suffered on the cross!

If sin is no big deal, then how do we explain a wrath against sin, that is so great, that it requires the death of the perfect Son of God to atone for it?

And what about Scriptures like this one:  Psalm 11:5, The LORD tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.

The holy, Mighty God hates sin and the wicked. And in His perfect justice, He pours His wrath out on sin.  Sin not to be played with, toyed with, laughed at, or winked at.  The Mush God looks the other way and claims to love us anyway.  The Mighty God of Scripture pours out His wrath on His Son, so that we can enter into His presence and have a relationship with Him.  That’s the greater portrait of love.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Furthermore, God loves us too much to leave us like we are. He requires repentance and change for our benefit. Knowing we can’t change ourselves, He sends His Holy Spirit to bring change and empower us to become witnesses of Jesus Christ. The Mush God of modern religion focuses on filling churches with people; whereas, the true Gospel of Jesus Christ emphasizes filling people with God!

It’s time to tear down the idol of this Mush God.  It’s time to restore the firm foundations of Scripture; to stop pandering to the world and start declaring God’s truth. It’s time to declare our Mighty God in all of His glory, in all of His grace, in all the power of the true Gospel.  It is time to stop making light of sin, and start making much of God. After all, we serve a Mighty God, not a Mush God!

There is an old chorus that we once sang in our worship services that went like this:

What a mighty God we serve; What a mighty God we serve; Angels bow before Him; Heaven and Earth adore Him; What a mighty God we serve!

Hebrews 12:29, "For our God is a consuming fire."

God spoke everything into existence. Because of man’s sin, He destroyed the earth once with a great flood. He has promised not to do that again, but will destroy everything a second time by an all-consuming fire. That day is approaching, and He is preparing a new heaven and a new earth for His redeemed, who will live eternally with Him.

Do you hear the spirit of the anti-Christ scoffing at what I just said? That spirit claims God is dead. Knowing you may not accept the idea that God is dead, the spirit of the anti-Christ offers a mush god instead—a god of your own design, who won’t destroy anyone.

Many people like the Mush God, but wouldn’t you rather serve a God who does not cower in fear and fights for what is right and holy and just? Mighty God does not fear, and He is not shaken by our circumstances and troubles. His battle plans are already completed and the victory is won before the battle begins.

Therefore, His followers have nothing to fear. Yes, Satan goes around like a roaring lion, but He cannot destroy anything that Mighty God has under His protection.

This church, and each of us as individuals, who are saved, filled with the Holy Spirit, and living for God, cannot be defeated by the devil unless we surrender. Let the battles come! Let the devil roar! Let the heathen scoff and rage! All they can do is kill our body. However, we will still be alive and enjoying our God, who is mighty. Therefore, we will not fear, for Mighty God is our shelter and our tower of defense!

Exodus 15:11 Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?

There is no other power that can compare to the Mighty God that we serve. There is none who can stand before Him! So, why do we sometimes fear? Why do we feel defeated? Why do we shrink from the battle? Why do we turn tail and run from the enemy?

Because, sometimes we leave His shelter of protection and fear enters in. When I wander away from God, panic strikes my heart. When I repent, God is faithful to forgive my sin, and I experience the comfort of His protection and love again.

There are times when we reach out and take the problems that we thought we gave to the Lord, and we pull them back, and we hold them close, and struggle with them. We let our imagination run wild, and we worry ourselves sick about the evils that endanger us and those we love. We forget Mighty God is in control.

What we need to do is trust our Mighty God! This is not some power of positive thinking; it is not some manipulative self-talk; it is not some Yoga technique. We will fear no evil because our Mighty God is here! He is really here! That is who the Holy Spirit is. God keeps His promises in even our deepest and the darkest of valleys.

Deuteronomy 32:39 “‘See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.

How mighty do YOU see God in your life? Is your God someone who stands afar and just watches what happens to you without any concern? Is your God sleeping and hard to awaken? Is your God too concerned with matters of His own to be concerned with even the smallest problems in your life? Is your God too weak to supply your every need; to heal even your head colds; to give you food, clothing, or to enable you to pay your bills? If that’s your picture of God, no wonder you have so much fear!

Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Fear will leave when we quit worshipping the Mush God and begin worshipping the Mighty God! Jesus is mighty enough to handle every sin we have committed and every situation that faces us! Not only that, but He is also mighty enough to turn it to our good!

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

Mighty God will cast out from us those enemies of our soul and of our life that would attempt to destroy us! He has given His angles charge over us, with orders to destroy all who would come against us!

1 Samuel 2:7-9 The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s, and on them he has set the world. He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail.

The Mighty God has all things under His control! He is the Giver and Taker of Life by His sovereign will and power. He controls the wealth of Heaven and of Earth to accomplish His will and meet our needs! He reigns in the affairs of men to raise leaders, who will do His will, and brings down those who will not!

Mighty God lifts us up from our life of sin. He washes off the filth of sin with His own blood that will never lose its power to cleanse. He gives us His undying love and mercy. He fills us with His grace. Then He bestows upon us all of the glories of Heaven and eternal life with Him! It is our Mighty God who does these things for us because we cannot do them for ourselves.

1 Chronicles 29:11-13 Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.

Yes, Jesus, our Mighty God, we praise your mighty name. We thank you for your wonderful power! We thank you for watching over us! We thank you for victory, for salvation, for provision, for all of your great promises!

1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,

The world cannot understand how God could ever come to this earth and allow men to murder Him on the cross. They find it hard to grasp the idea of God living in the body of a man, in all of the weaknesses that are inherent with humanity, and yet be Mighty God at the same time! So they reject the Truth and fashion a Mush God in their own likeness.

Yes, our Mighty God, came to earth in the form of a man, died on the cross for our sin, and gave His own blood that we might be saved from our sin! But—now get this—He arose from the dead by His OWN great power and majesty!

John 10:17-18 “For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”

Now THAT IS a MIGHTY GOD! That’s the God that we trust in! That’s the God that we serve! He is a living God and able to help us in all of our weaknesses.

2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

THE MIGHTY GOD that we serve IS ABLE! He is able to bring every good and perfect gift to us! He is able to meet our every need! He is able to give us life and life abundantly!

If you are not serving this Mighty God, then you are under His judgment. However, that can be changed today. Repent of living life your way and serving a mush god, who is really Satan in disguise. Serve the Mighty God by giving your life to Jesus Christ. You can begin this relationship by confessing Jesus Christ as the Son of God, who atoned for your sin on the cross. Then die to your old self in baptism. You will be born again of the Holy Spirit. The Mighty God will abide in you and begin changing you from one degree of glory to another into the image of His Son, Jesus Christ.
